We had the pleasure of speaking to the women of Safer Group about their experiences and insights into the role of women in the security industry.

International Women’s Day at Safer Group

At Safer Group, we are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day 2025 by shining a spotlight on the incredible women who contribute to the security industry. Security has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated field, but every day, women across our company -and the wider sector- challenge outdated perceptions and prove that security is for everyone.

To mark this occasion, we asked our female colleagues to share their experiences, thoughts, and advice on working in security. Their responses highlight the diverse paths that led them here, the evolving perception of women in the industry, and their hopes for the future.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the security industry?

A career in security could begin by being enticed to the industry by advancements in technology and the opportunity to be part of an evolving sector. “I believe in the power of technology, and I want to ensure it's used for good.”

Another respondent shared, "I have a fascination for technology and innovation. I have been fortunate enough to receive opportunities for career growth and the industry will continue to offer me the challenge I seek in a job".

For one, a major news story drove them toward security, with a desire to make a difference following tragic events. Another found themselves in security after looking for a career that provided structure and progression.

"The role I was in originally had no progression opportunities, but I found that career opportunity through Safer. The technology within the industry was improving vastly, and I found the work I was doing meaningful and satisfying."

Do you think the outdated perception of women in the security industry is changing?

A study from Statista shows that in 2024 women make up approximately 11% of the UK security workforce, while 17.9% of women make up the UK cybersecurity workforce. These figures are steadily increasing as more organisations recognise the value of a diverse workforce. The perception of women in security can be deemed to be shifting, however this can be happening at different speeds depending on the sector.

Most of our respondents were optimistic: "I’ve met some incredible women in this industry who hold senior positions, and they have the utmost respect and trust, which is hugely encouraging." Another added

" Throughout working within the industry, I have met so many determined, knowledgeable and compassionate woman that have a lot to offer and know what value they bring to the industry. I can only say that everyone has been so inclusive and unbiased which is refreshing."

However, others felt the industry can still improve. Mentions of a “boys club” mentality persist, while one noted “Traditionally, when people hear the word "security" they associate it with a bouncer on a door that won't let you in. There is so much more to it than that - CCTV, cybersecurity, emergency response, defence, disaster and risk management etc.”

While progress is evident, there will always still work to be done to break old stereotypes and ensure more women have access to the vast array of roles on offer.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in security?

The security industry is vast, offering opportunities in physical security, cybersecurity, risk management, and more. One key piece of advice shared by our team was to explore different areas to find where your skills and interests align. "The security field is broad. Explore different areas such as cybersecurity, physical security, or emerging tech to see what fits you best. Then, build your network - connect with other women in the industry for support, guidance and mentorship. Your unique perspective is needed in the security industry."

Confidence and self-advocacy were also key themes.

"Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to speak up. There are fantastic female role models in our industry - go find them, as they will happily help raise you up."

Another respondent added, "It’s a hard industry to break, so just have the attitude that whatever anyone else does, you can do better."

For many, the key to success lies in perseverance, finding allies, and being unapologetically yourself. As one respondent put it: "Really cliché, but don’t be afraid to be yourself within this industry-don’t minimise your experience or character."

Looking Ahead: A More Diverse Future

At Safer Group, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce. The security industry is evolving, and with more women stepping into key roles, the future is looking brighter than ever. By challenging outdated perceptions, supporting each other, and proving that skill and dedication - not gender - define success in security, we can continue to drive positive change.

On this International Women’s Day, we want to celebrate the resilience, strength, and achievements of the women in security. Your contributions are invaluable, and your presence is shaping the future of this industry for the better.

Here’s to a future where security is truly a space for everyone.
